|
· Develop hand-out so that they include layers of support, helping learners’ complete tasks. Also include references for further support.
|
· In the future hand-outs there will be explanation remarks with each step in a text box. Also references for further reading will be included,
|
Will be monitored and reviewed in next observation
| |
· Manage learning using appropriate teaching techniques and employing effective communication strategies.
|
· Plan how to deploy different strategies to get learners to work together so that the learning aims of the collaborative stages in the lesson are achieved.
|
· Different strategies for working on the hand-out will be included. These could be group work and cross group assessment, individual work and peer assessment.

To be completed by observer
|
To be completed by the observee together with the observer. Actions could involve working with: learner services, advanced teachers, professional development, curriculum review, student mentors, student buddying.
| |
· Timing – breaking up activities
· nominations - perhaps more
· spelling of learners’ names needs to be consistent to avoid confusion about names
· Picture or image on hand-out to make it interesting
· Give example about the topic from real life
|
· Teacher explained why it is better not to give a time limit
· More nomination will be made and the learners will be allowed to take time to think about the answers
· The names of the Learners will be copied from the register in future
· Where possible the hand-out will be made more interesting and user friendly by putting some topic relevant images in future
· Effort will be made to make the topic visibly pertinent to real life

What was my opinion about my lesson?
In this lesson the learners were introduced to “differential calculus” and they were taught how to derivate trigonometric functions.
The learners were taught the basic rule governing the derivation of trigonometric functions. This was followed by demonstration of using the rule through solving some numerical examples. The learner participated in solving a worksheet given to them. While solving the worksheet the learners interacted by helping each other in the group. They were observed and monitored during the activity. Help was given to weaker learners.
How the mentor evaluated my lesson:
The lesson was lesson evaluated as pass by the mentor. However some areas were highlighted for further improvements.
What can be improved and How (Action Plan)
The following table shows the areas which needs improvements and the plans for these improvements.

Planning and preparation (for example, lesson plan and other evidence). | · There are a lot of essential skills to be developed, these need to be mentioned in lesson plan. | · Essential skills development will be catered for by inviting suggestion from professional development team and will be mentioned in the lesson plan where necessary. | Will be monitored and reviewed in next observation |
Use and appropriateness of material/resources | · Hand written exercises were given to students to complete, these resources allowed for differentiation as they were written in descending difficulty and extension exercises were written on the back page. The lesson did not include ICT. | · Proper word processed computer generated worksheets will be printed and provided to learners in future | Will be monitored and reviewed in next observation |
Subject knowledge and development of essential skills | · Language skills could have been supported by using a glossary for new terms. | · Subject related topic specific glossary will be included in essential skills as language skills | Will be monitored and reviewed in next observation |

What was my opinion about my lesson?
The aim of this lesson was to equip the learners with the understanding of logarithm and its application to non-linear and indicial equations.
In order to achieve the aims the learners were taught the logarithm. The learners were introduced to the concept of logarithm and were made to solve some numerical examples to consolidate their understanding. During the lesson the students were engaged through maximum interaction in a cooperative and friendly way. At the end of the session each student was confident to tell what they learnt during the lesson. Their feedback showed that they achieved maximum learning outcomes of the lesson.

Planning and preparation (for example, lesson plan and other evidence). | · Clear plan to check learning should be included e.g. task completion, Q&A, describing process etc. · Include the LLN level of thestudents. · More differentiation strategies should be used to help weaker students | · In my lesson plan I will include clear plan of techniques used for checking the learning · I will include the LLN level of the learners in my lesson plan · I will include more differentiated teaching techniques to help slow learner | Will be monitored and reviewed in next observation in Jan 2013 |
Use and appropriateness of material/resources | · Providing worksheet with differential questions will help slow learner and will challenge more ambitious learner | · I will develop graded worksheets for each session including multiple questions and extension activities. This will cater for helping slow learners and challenging ambitious ones | Will be monitored and reviewed in next observation in Jan 2013 |
Manage learning using appropriate teaching techniques and employing effective communication strategies. | · Resort to various teaching and learning activities to keep students engaged. | · I will resort to various teaching activities in my teaching sessions e.g. discussion, group work, completing activities, graded worksheets etc | Will be monitored and reviewed in next observation in Jan 2013 |
Monitoring and assessing learning | · Having longer activities after the presentation stage will enable you to monitor learning more.
| · A graded worksheets including multiple questions and extension activities will allow more time for monitoring resulting in better assessment of learning | Will be monitored and reviewed in next observation in Jan 2013 |

What was my opinion about my lesson?
The aim of this lesson was to equip the learner with the understanding of sequences (Progressions) and its application to practical problems.
In order to achieve the aims the learner were taught the Arithmetic and geometric progressions. The learners were introduced to the concept of progressions and were made to solve some numerical examples to consolidate their understanding.
During the lesson the students were engaged through maximum interaction in a cooperative and friendly way. The interaction with students was intended to make the learning process an interesting and enjoyable experience with optimum outcome. During the lesson the students were nominated to answer some relevant questions based on reasoning to make sure their grasp of the concept of the topic and to highlight their weak points to further consolidate their understanding they were exposed to more numerical examples. Help was made available to weak students.
At the end of the session each student was confident to tell what they learnt during the lesson. Their feedback showed that they achieved maximum learning outcomes of the lesson.
I was pleased with the outcomes of the session and the topic was covered as planned. The students showed their interest by taking active parts in various parts of the lesson. The interactive way of teaching encouraged maximum input from the students and made the learning experience a live mutual process rather information bombardment.
How the group evaluated my lesson:
There was some evidence of active involvement of the learners in this lesson: for example, writing at the board, working in groups, etc. There were some opportunities for learners to reflect on their learning, when they were asked to summarise what they had learnt at the end of the session. There was also some links made to previous learning.
However, there was far too much teacher-centred lecturing and not nearly enough time for the students to practise what they were learning through group work and discussion. The following areas were identified for improvements:
· The presentation stage needed to cut down to less than half the lesson and allow much more time for students to work independently.
· There should be much more nomination asking students more probing questions to test their understanding.
· More active participation from learners during whole class work should be encouraged such that the learners interact with each other.
· More ICT should be integrated into the lessons where appropriate: this would cut down on the time I spent drawing and writing on the board and ensure that diagrams or other board work could be referred to later.
What can be improved and How (Action Plan)
The following table shows the highlighted weak points in my lesson as perceived from the group feedback and the planning of possible ways for improvements

· Insufficient group- and pair-work. · Lack of learner participation during whole class-work. · Lack of directed questioning and probing concept checking. · Lack of integration of ICT | · More actively engaged and motivated learners. · Balance between the Teacher Talking Time (TTT) and Student Talking Time (STT) · integration of ICT where possible | · Arrange a meeting with Professional Development for effective advice.
